In the gospel of John, the definition of Eternal Life has been provided by Jesus Himself: “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3). Again in John chapter ten, Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). The Lord Jesus came to our world to give us His life. The Eternal Life is the life of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. He came that people may have life in Him that is meaningful and eternal. We receive this abundant eternal life the moment we receive Him in the Holy Spirit and let him dwell in us and accept Him as our Savior.
Jesus promises us a life far better than we could ever imagine. It was described in 1 Corinthians 2:9, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.” Saint Paul tells us in his letter to the Ephesians: “God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think and He does it by His power, a power that is at work within us if we belong to Him” (Ephesians 3:20).
Having the eternal life, the life of God in us, truly means having manifested in us an abundance of love, joy, peace, and the rest of the fruits of the Spirit. The eternal life is the life a true believer is concerned with, determined by a relationship with God. Eternal life is found in Jesus Christ, whom we receive in the Holy Spirit, so if you have Jesus, you have this life. Jesus is the only way to God the Father and eternal life. We read in the gospel of John chapter fourteen, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
Eternal life intimately knowings God and Jesus Christ, whom He sent to give us eternal life. Knowing God does not mean learning about God, but it means those who seek Him, God will reveal Jesus to them, and they will repent of their sin and receive the gift of eternal life. They will come into unity with the Son of God, and he will open their eyes and will lead their way to be the Kingdom of God. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”(John 3:16).
The Son of God Jesus came to take away our sinful nature to restore our image, to be in His likeness. He died on the cross and shed His blood to confront all the satanic works, and He conquered death and sin by His resurrection. He gave us His victory and His eternal life. To be saved from death, we must unite with the Life that overcomes death. “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life” (Romans 6:22). The life that overcomes death is the life of Jesus, who overcame death by His cross, and proclaimed it by His resurrection “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:47-51).
To obtain this precious eternal life, we first believe and confess that Jesus is Lord, to receive Him, let Him dwell in us, abide in him and obey His commands. At that time, you will be "born again" from above, and you have become a new creature in Christ.“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”(2 Cor 5:17).
